# 13. High-Speed Local Storage: AsyncStorage vs MMKV (100x Faster Sync KV Store)

> React Native Notes by Rishabh - Topic 13

---

### 1. Why AsyncStorage Is Legacy Bottleneck 🐌

* **AsyncStorage:** Asynchronous Bridge JSON serialization $\rightarrow$ Native SQLite/File I/O $\rightarrow$ Bridge serialization back.
* **MMKV (Tencent WeChat Core Engine ⚡):** **Direct C++ JSI Pointer Memory-Mapped Files (`mmap`)!** 100% Synchronous, **100x faster than AsyncStorage!**

---

### 2. MMKV Usage & Encryption

```typescript
import { MMKV } from 'react-native-mmkv';
export const storage = new MMKV({
    id: 'user-storage',
    encryptionKey: 'super-secure-encryption-key' // Hardware AES-256 encrypted!
});
// Synchronous Instant Read/Write (Zero Promises / Zero Await!):
storage.set('user_token', 'jwt_xyz123');
const token = storage.getString('user_token'); // Instant synchronous return!
```

---

### 3. Master Comparison Matrix

| Metric | AsyncStorage | React Native MMKV |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Speed (Read/Write 10K items)**| ~1200ms | ⚡ **< 12ms (100x Faster!)** |
| **API Nature** | Asynchronous (`await storage.get()`) | 👑 **100% Synchronous (`storage.get()`)** |
| **Memory Mapping** | ❌ File serialization | ✅ **OS Kernel `mmap`** |
| **Hardware Encryption** | ❌ None (Plaintext on disk) | 🛡️ **AES-256 Hardware Encrypted** |

---

### 4. Interview Ke 3 Sawal Is Topic Se

1. **`mmap` (Memory-Mapped File) MMKV ko crash-resilient kaise banata hai?** -> OS kernel virtual memory page ko direct disk file se map karta hai; app crash hone par bhi OS kernel dirty pages ko disk par flush kar deta hai.
2. **MMKV me state changes React components me re-render kaise trigger karte hain?** -> `useMMKVString` / `useMMKVBoolean` hooks use karke jo MMKV instance ke key change listener se bind hote hain.
3. **AsyncStorage se MMKV par data migrate kaise karte hain?** -> `initializeMMKV()` step par check karo agar AsyncStorage me legacy keys hain toh ek baar bulk read karke MMKV me write karke purge kar do.

**Next Topic:** 14. Offline-First Architecture: WatermelonDB / SQLite with Background Cloud Synchronization
