# 12. Optimistic UI Updates with useOptimistic Hook in Server Actions

> Next.js 14+ Notes by Rishabh - Topic 12

### 1. Optimistic UI Kya Hai? (0ms Instant Feedback ⚡)

Instagram / WhatsApp par jab tu message bhejta hai ya Like button dabata hai — UI **server response ka intezaar nahi karta, turant UI update kar deta hai!**
Agar server write fail ho jaye, toh React UI ko seamlessly **purane state par rollback kar deta hai!**

---

### 2. `useOptimistic` Hook Implementation

```tsx
// components/OptimisticLike.tsx
"use client";
import { useOptimistic, startTransition } from "react";
import { toggleLikeAction } from "@/app/actions/like";
export default function OptimisticLike({ postId, initialLikes }: { postId: string; initialLikes: number }) {
    const [optimisticLikes, setOptimisticLikes] = useOptimistic(
        initialLikes,
        (currentLikes, optimisticIncrement: number) => currentLikes + optimisticIncrement
    );
async function handleLike() {
        startTransition(async () => {
            // ⚡ 1. Instantly update UI (0ms delay):
            setOptimisticLikes(1);
// 🚀 2. Execute Server Action in background:
            await toggleLikeAction(postId);
        });
    }
return (
        <button onClick={handleLike} className="flex items-center gap-2 text-red-500 font-bold">
            ❤️ <span>{optimisticLikes} Likes</span>
        </button>
    );
}
```

### 3. Master Comparison Matrix

---

### 4. Interview Ke 3 Sawal Is Topic Se

1. **`useOptimistic` hook ko `startTransition` ke andar call karna kyu zaroori hota hai?** -> Taaki React ko pata chale ki ye update ek async concurrent transaction ka hissa hai aur server action resolve/reject hote hi state synchronize kar sake.
2. **Server Action fail hone par `useOptimistic` rollback kaise karta hai?** -> Kyunki optimistic state derived state hoti hai jo server se aane wale fresh props se automatically reconcile ho jaati hai.
3. **`useOptimistic` aur TanStack Query ke optimistic update me kya difference hai?** -> TanStack Query global cache ko mutate karta hai; `useOptimistic` native React 19 primitive hai jo direct Server Actions aur RSC stream ke sath integrated hai.
