18. Microservices Architecture: gRPC Protocols with Protocol Buffers in Node.js • Node.js Backend Architecture: Libuv to High-Scale Microservices • Rishabh Ki Kaksha

* **REST API (JSON over HTTP/1.1):** Human-readable text format, large string payload size, slow serialization/deserialization.
* **gRPC (Protocol Buffers over HTTP/2):** Binary serialization, strictly typed `.proto` contracts, multiplexed bidirectional streaming, **7x to 10x faster than REST!**

---

### 2. Defining The Contract: `user.proto`

```protobuf
syntax = "proto3";
package user;
service UserService {
  rpc GetUser (UserRequest) returns (UserResponse);
  rpc StreamTransactions (UserRequest) returns (stream TransactionResponse);
}
message UserRequest {
  string user_id = 1;
}
message UserResponse {
  string id = 1;
  string name = 2;
  string email = 3;
  bool is_active = 4;
}
message TransactionResponse {
  string tx_id = 1;
  double amount = 2;
}
```

---

### 3. Node.js gRPC Server Implementation

```typescript
import * as grpc from "@grpc/grpc-js";
import * as protoLoader from "@grpc/proto-loader";
const packageDefinition = protoLoader.loadSync("user.proto");
const proto = (grpc.loadPackageDefinition(packageDefinition) as any).user;
const server = new grpc.Server();
server.addService(proto.UserService.service, {
    getUser: (call: any, callback: any) => {
        const userId = call.request.user_id;
        // Fast DB Lookup
        callback(null, { id: userId, name: "Rishabh", email: "rishabh@boost.in", is_active: true });
    }
});
server.bindAsync("0.0.0.0:50051", grpc.ServerCredentials.createInsecure(), () => {
    console.log("⚡ gRPC Server running on port 50051");
    server.start();
});
```

### 5. Interview Ke 3 Sawal Is Topic Se

1. **Protocol Buffers me fields ke aage numbering (`string id = 1;`) kyu hoti hai?** -> Ye numbers binary wire format me field identifier banate hain; field names binary me transmit nahi hote jisse payload size 80% chhota ho jata hai.
2. **HTTP/2 Multiplexing gRPC me latency kaise kam karti hai?** -> Ek single persistent TCP connection ke upar hazaro concurrent RPC requests bina Head-of-Line blocking ke parallel stream hoti hain.
3. **Browser directly gRPC call kyu nahi kar sakta?** -> Kyunki standard web browsers HTTP/2 frames aur low-level gRPC transport control expose nahi karte (Iske liye `grpc-web` proxy lagani padti hai).
