# 13. Platform Channels: MethodChannel, EventChannel & BasicMessageChannel for Swift/Kotlin Interop

> Flutter & Dart Notes by Rishabh - Topic 13

---

### 1. The 3 Platform Channels 🌉

1. **MethodChannel:** One-time asynchronous request/response (e.g. Battery percentage).
2. **EventChannel:** Continuous event stream from Native to Flutter (e.g. Accelerometer / Pedometer stream).
3. **BasicMessageChannel:** Low-overhead raw string/byte buffer messaging.

---

### 2. MethodChannel Implementation (Dart + Kotlin)

```dart
// Flutter Dart Side:
class NativeBatteryService {
    static const _channel = MethodChannel('com.boostengine.kaksha/battery');
static Future<int> getBatteryLevel() async {
        final int result = await _channel.invokeMethod('getBatteryLevel');
        return result;
    }
}
```

```kotlin
// Android Kotlin Side (MainActivity.kt):
MethodChannel(flutterEngine.dartExecutor.binaryMessenger, "com.boostengine.kaksha/battery").setMethodCallHandler { call, result ->
    if (call.method == "getBatteryLevel") {
        val bm = getSystemService(Context.BATTERY_SERVICE) as BatteryManager
        val level = bm.getIntProperty(BatteryManager.BATTERY_PROPERTY_CAPACITY)
        result.success(level)
    } else {
        result.notImplemented()
    }
}
```

### 3. Master Comparison Matrix

---

### 4. Interview Ke 3 Sawal Is Topic Se

1. **Platform Channel me serialization overhead kitna hota hai?** -> StandardMessageCodec binary buffer serialization use karta hai (~0.1ms); heavy binary data ke liye `Uint8List` zero-copy transfer best practice hai.
2. **Pigeon library Platform Channels me kya simplify karti hai?** -> Dart interface se type-safe Swift/Kotlin stub code auto-generate karti hai (Zero manual string matching!).
3. **UI Thread freeze hone se native side par kaise bacha jata hai?** -> Native side par heavy tasks `CoroutineScope(Dispatchers.IO)` ya background thread pool me run karke response main thread par return karna.

---
**Next Topic:** 14. Dart FFI (Foreign Function Interface): Calling High-Performance C/C++ & Rust Native Libraries
